The Genesis of Inman Tire and Feed

Inman Feed Mill began back in the mid-1950s when Horace Ballenger of Inman built the mill on what was then a dual-lane road, and the most direct route between Spartanburg and Asheville. Inman was a rural town of farms, peach orchards, and a textile mill. Small farmers brought their home-grown corn to the mill for grinding into cattle and hog feed. Carroll Mitchell bought the mill in the 1960s. Clarence Gibbs and Joe Peeler took over operations in 1980, and broadened the product line, and continued to mix feed for all kinds of domesticated animals . At the same time these partners bought out Bill Cheek, who was running the Inman Tire store next door.

After Carl Watner moved to South Carolina in late 1986, he did some fence repair work for the Gibbs’ family and was asked to take over operation of Inman Feed Mill (since the Gibbs-Peeler partnership had ended a few years earlier). In the meantime, Clarence Gibbs had continued his real estate work at Inman Realty and ran Inman Tire Service. In early 1997, Carl took over day-to-day operations at Inman Tire Service and has continued to run both Inman Feed Mill and Inman Tire Service. The sister businesses are now known as Inman Tire and Feed. Carl is often referred to as “the man who walks between the buildings,” as he guides the operations at both Inman Tire and Inman Feed Mill.
